The National Rural Health Mission (External website that opens in a new window) (NRHM) is a government scheme that aims at providing valuable healthcare services to rural households all over the country. It specially focuses on the 18 States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Orissa,Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarkhand and Uttar Pradesh.
The major objectives of the National Rural Health Mission are:
The mission envisages achieving its objective by strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions (94 KB) (PDF file that opens in a new window) and promoting access to improved healthcare through the Accredited Female Health Activist (External website that opens in a new window) (ASHA). It also plans on strengthening existing Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres and District Health Missions, in addition to making maximum use of Non Governmental Organizations.

The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) (278 KB) (PDF file that opens in a new window) is a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality rates and increasing institutional deliveries in below poverty line (BPL) families. The JSY, which falls under the overall umbrella of National Rural Health Mission (External website that opens in a new window), covers all pregnant women belonging to households below the poverty line, above 19 years of age and up to two live births.
The JSY, launched in 2003, modifies the existing National Maternity Benefit Scheme (16 KB) (PDF file that opens in a new window) or NMBS. While the NMBS was connected with providing a better diet for pregnant women from below poverty line (BPL) families, the JSY integrates help in the form of cash with antenatal care during pregnancy period, institutional care during delivery as well as post-partum care (External website that opens in a new window). This is provided by field level health workers through a system of coordinated care and health centres.
